Where should you start?
Watch Lethal Weapon first and follow the numbered sequels. The cases change, but the partnership between Riggs and Murtaugh, their family connections and the ensemble around them develop across the four films.
The four films in release order
This guide covers the four released films in the original movie series. It does not insert the television adaptation or proposed future films into that sequence.
Do you need to watch every previous film?
Release order is the best first-watch choice because the relationship is a large part of the attraction. Starting with a later case may still give you an action story to follow, but familiarity between the characters will arrive before you have seen how it developed.
If you are trying the series for the first time, begin with one film rather than booking a four-film marathon. The original establishes the mismatch between its partners and gives you a clear sense of whether the blend of comedy and violent action is what you want.
How does the tone change?
The first film has a darker emotional edge. Later entries make more room for the expanding ensemble, familiar arguments and the comfort of returning characters. That shift can be appealing if the relationship is your favorite part, or less satisfying if you came mainly for the original’s harder thriller tone.
This is why we recommend watching in sequence even though there is no elaborate alternate chronology. You are following changes in how the characters live and work together, not just solving four cases in a particular order.
Our take on the collection
Moviebase editorial
The enduring appeal is the friction between partners who do not approach life the same way. The action gives them immediate problems; their differing temperaments make the quieter exchanges matter. When that balance works, a conversation can carry as much personality as a chase.
The tradeoff is that the films’ humor and attitudes reflect their period. Some moments can feel dated or uncomfortable rather than affectionate. The violence also makes this a different proposition from a light buddy comedy, so choose it with the group’s tastes in mind.
Planning your watchlist
One film per evening lets the evolving partnership carry the sequence. Two double features are another option: pair 1–2, then 3–4, and check the combined runtimes before setting a start time. The full four-film watch is close to eight hours before breaks using the current card data.
Keep the TV adaptation in a separate list. It reworks the premise and is not an extra chapter that must be placed between the movies. If you want a more tightly focused pursuit thriller next, compare Taken’s three-film route.
