Best Apps for Managing a Movie Collection

Best Apps for Managing a Movie Collection: Know what is on your shelf.

Compare two different ways to organize owned DVDs, Blu-rays and digital titles.

The short answer

Choose My Movies for a disc inventory with edition details and loans. Consider CineTrak for format categories alongside viewing history. A normal watchlist is not a replacement for an inventory.

Find your fit

My Movies

Best for: disc editions and loans

The specialist choice here when identifying the copy you own matters.

Catalog the editions you own, not just the films you have seen.

  • Barcode-based entry
  • Disc details and loan management

The trade-off: The free edition limits collection size; upgrades vary by platform.

Limited free edition; paid upgrades.

CineTrak

Best for: owned formats alongside tracking

Consider it when broad format categories are enough and you also want a viewing record.

Combine viewing records with categories for owned media.

  • DVD, Blu-ray, digital and VHS categories
  • Trakt and custom lists

The trade-off: The Play listing is older; check compatibility before building a large library.

Before you choose

Decide whether you need a film title or an exact edition. A box set, region, barcode, shelf location and loan record are inventory concerns; a watched flag cannot capture all of them.

Try a box set and a less common disc before entering the whole shelf. Check export options and keep an independent copy of your inventory. Moviebase is useful for viewing history, but is not included here as a specialist disc-catalog recommendation.

How we selected these apps

Written by Moviebase. We matched documented features to each use case using official listings and product documentation reviewed September 12–13, 2026. Logos are publisher artwork. These are editorial recommendations, not hands-on test results. Store availability, features and plans can vary by region and platform.

Questions

Can I use a watchlist as a disc inventory?

Only for a simple list of titles. If you need editions, barcodes, formats or loans, choose a tool designed for those records.

Will a collection import preserve every edition detail?

Do not assume so. A destination that accepts film titles may not accept box sets, barcodes or loan records. Keep the original inventory export.
