Harry Potter Movies in Order: Complete Wizarding World Watch Guide

Why Harry Potter Works as a Marathon

The Harry Potter series is one of the simplest franchises to watch in order. There is no alternate timeline debate, no parallel universe confusion. The 8 films follow a single story from start to finish, released in sequence, growing darker and more complex as Harry ages. It is one of the most rewarding movie marathons you can plan.

The films span a decade of production, with the same core cast growing up on screen. Watching them in order is the only way to experience that progression.

Create a "Harry Potter Marathon" list in Moviebase and add all 8 films in order. Track your progress as you work through the Wizarding World.

The Watch Order

The Early Years (Films 1-3)

Philosopher's Stone (2001) introduces Harry, Hogwarts, and the magical world with a sense of wonder that defines the first act of the series. Chamber of Secrets (2002) deepens the mystery and the lore. Both films are directed by Chris Columbus and have a warm, family-friendly tone.

Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) is where the series transforms. Director Alfonso Cuaron brought a darker visual style and more emotional depth. Many fans consider it the best film in the series.

The Middle Years (Films 4-6)

Goblet of Fire (2005) raises the stakes dramatically. The Triwizard Tournament drives the action, and the ending changes the entire trajectory of the series. Order of the Phoenix (2007) is about rebellion, authority, and Harry learning to lead. Half-Blood Prince (2009) is the emotional setup for the finale, with revelations that reframe everything.

The Finale (Films 7-8)

Deathly Hallows Part 1 (2010) strips away Hogwarts entirely. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are on the run, and the film has a road-movie tension unlike anything else in the series. Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011) delivers the climactic battle and wraps up every major thread.

Watch Parts 1 and 2 back-to-back if possible. They were conceived as one story.
