Scream Movies in Order: All 7 Films Without Spoilers
Start with Scream (1996) and follow release order through Scream 7 (2026). Scream (2022) is the fifth film in the same series, not a replacement for the original.
The watch order
Where should you start?
Use release order and avoid summaries of later films. Returning survivors and references to previous crimes make this a series where spoilers can travel backward. The later film also called Scream continues the franchise; it is not a replacement for the 1996 original.
All seven Scream films in release order
- Scream (1996)
- Scream 2 (1997)
- Scream 3 (2000)
- Scream 4 (2011)
- Scream (2022)
- Scream VI (2023)
- Scream 7 (2026)
This guide covers the seven released theatrical films through Scream 7 (2026), checked on September 13, 2026. The television series is separate. Release order is our recommended viewing route; there is no need to rearrange the films around references to earlier crimes.
Is Scream (2022) a remake?
No. Despite repeating the original title, it is the fifth film in the continuing movie series. Use the year when searching or adding it to a watchlist. The 1996 original introduces the setting and relationships that later films revisit; the 2022 film builds on that history while shifting attention toward newer characters.
You can understand the broad setup of the later film without every earlier detail, but that is a tradeoff: returning characters carry less meaning, and references can reveal things you would rather discover in the older films. For a first watch, start at the beginning instead of treating the repeated title as a reset.
Can you stop after the original trilogy?
Yes. The first three films make a manageable initial commitment. Watch Scream, Scream 2 and Scream 3 in that order, then decide whether to continue. This is a shorter viewing plan, not a claim that the later films belong to a different continuity.
Scream 4 returns after a longer release gap. The fifth and sixth films give more space to a newer group, while Scream 7 brings Sidney back to the center. Those changes do not make the earlier stories irrelevant. If you continue, keep following the release list rather than choosing the next film from a plot summary.
How to avoid spoilers while planning
Even cast discussions and rankings can reveal which characters return. Add the titles to a checklist without reading later synopses, and save explanations of endings until after each film. You do not need to research every horror reference in advance; the central mystery is more valuable to preserve than a complete catalogue of references.
Our take on the collection
Moviebase editorial
The appeal comes from the balance of mystery, slasher tension and commentary on horror storytelling. That self-awareness can be playful, but it also asks viewers to enjoy conversations about genre conventions. Graphic violence remains central even when the dialogue is funny.
Planning your watchlist
Watch each entry before reading rankings or cast explanations for the next. The television adaptations are outside this film guide, and announced sequels are excluded from the released-film grid.
One film per night gives each mystery its own space. If you prefer double features, pair 1–2, 3–4 and 5–6, then leave Scream 7 for another evening. This is a scheduling suggestion, not a new story order. The displayed total uses the seven standard runtimes and excludes breaks or differences between editions.
For a different slasher structure afterward, our Halloween viewing guide separates that franchise's competing timelines. Download Moviebase to build your own Scream checklist and mark each film watched. The download link helps you get the app; it does not automatically add these films.
