Where should you start?

Watch The Secret Service and The Golden Circle before the earlier-set The King’s Man. Release order introduces the modern organization first, then offers an origin story with a different cast and historical setting. The prequel is not a direct continuation of Eggsy’s adventures.

The three films in release order

  1. Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015)
  2. Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)
  3. The King's Man (2021)

This guide covers the three released features in the displayed collection. Release years identify the films, not their story settings. Announced projects and other adaptations are outside this viewing checklist.

Chronological order: where does The King's Man go?

The King's Man takes the premise back to the organization's origins around the First World War. If you want the main story periods in chronological order, use:

  1. The King's Man (2021)
  2. Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015)
  3. Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

That order gives you the historical background first. Release order gives you the modern version of Kingsman before exploring how it began. We recommend release order for newcomers because the first film establishes the style and expectations that made the later origin story possible. Neither route requires rearranging scenes or flashbacks.

Can you watch only the two Eggsy films?

Yes. The Secret Service and The Golden Circle are the connected modern pair. Start with The Secret Service to meet Eggsy and the organization, then continue with The Golden Circle. The second film assumes that introduction, so it is a less useful starting point on its own.

The King's Man follows a different generation. You can leave it for later without missing a chapter in Eggsy's immediate story. Choose it when you want to explore the premise in another period, rather than expecting the next stage of the same partnership.

Is the prequel suitable as a standalone film?

Its different cast and origin-story focus make it possible to start there. The main compromise is tonal: a historical adventure is a different first impression from the modern films' spy parody. If that period interests you more, the chronological route is reasonable; return to The Secret Service afterward to begin the modern pair properly.

Our take on the collection

Moviebase editorial

The modern films combine spy-film exaggeration, tailored style and deliberately outrageous violence. The prequel changes the balance toward historical adventure. Humor and brutality can collide sharply, so familiarity with traditional spy films does not guarantee that this particular tone will suit you.

Planning your watchlist

The first two films make the clearest connected pair. Treat the prequel as a separate evening and a change of tone rather than expecting another version of the same partnership.

Give the modern pair two evenings, then decide whether to add the prequel. A three-film marathon is also possible, but check the runtimes and leave room for breaks. The total above includes all three films; it is not the duration of the shorter Eggsy route.

These are adult-oriented action films, despite the playful spy gadgets and comic tone. Check the local content guidance for the edition you choose. For a different balance of suspense and team missions, compare Mission: Impossible in order.
