How to Use Watchlists in Moviebase
Beginner5 minutes

Stop Scrolling, Start Picking

The average person spends 18 minutes deciding what to watch before giving up and rewatching something familiar. A well-organized watchlist eliminates that dead time. Instead of browsing three streaming apps hoping something catches your eye, you open your curated list and pick in seconds.

Moviebase goes beyond a single "watch later" bucket. It supports multiple custom watchlists that sync with Trakt.tv, so your lists are always available and never lost.

1Understand Default Lists

Moviebase comes with a default watchlist that acts as your primary "want to watch" list. When you tap the bookmark icon on any movie or TV show, it goes here. This list syncs with your Trakt.tv watchlist if connected.

The default watchlist works great for getting started, but as your list grows past 30-40 titles, it becomes hard to scan. That is when custom lists pay off.

Think of the default watchlist as "what I might watch this week," not "every movie I have ever heard of." Move long-term picks to dedicated lists.

2Create Custom Lists

Navigate to the lists section and tap create. Give each list a name that makes its purpose instantly clear:

  • Weekend Watches — light, fun movies for lazy Saturdays
  • Date Night — romantic or crowd-pleasing films
  • Documentary Queue — non-fiction films and series
  • Classic Must-Sees — older films on your bucket list
  • Currently Airing — TV shows you follow this season

Start with 3-5 lists. You can always add more as your habits evolve, but starting lean prevents list fatigue.

3Add Content to Lists

There are multiple ways to add titles:

  • Detail page: Open any movie or show and tap the list button to choose which list it belongs to
  • Long-press: Long-press any poster in search results, trending, or discovery to quick-add without opening the detail page
  • Multiple lists: A single title can belong to several lists at once

When you add a title from the detail page, you can select multiple lists at once. A comfort-rewatch comedy can live in both "Feel-Good Movies" and "Weekend Watches."

4Manage and Prioritize Your Lists

Moviebase lets you sort lists by date added, title, rating, or release date. Use sorting to float the most relevant content to the top.

Maintenance habits that keep lists useful:

  • Remove titles you skipped three times — if you keep passing it, you do not actually want to watch it
  • Move watched titles out promptly so your list always shows unwatched content
  • Split a list that grows past 50 items into two more specific categories

A lean list is a useful list. A bloated one becomes another thing to scroll through.

5Share and Sync Your Lists

With Trakt.tv connected, every list syncs automatically. Changes you make in Moviebase appear on the Trakt website and in any other Trakt-compatible app.

Trakt also supports public lists. If you have curated a definitive list of underrated horror films or essential sci-fi classics, making it public lets friends and the broader community benefit from your taste.
