Track Everything You Watch at Home — Automatically

If you use Plex or Kodi as your media center, you are probably watching a lot of content that never gets tracked. Every movie night, every binge session, every revisit of a favorite show — none of it shows up in your viewing statistics or watch history unless you manually log each title.

Trakt.tv solves this with scrobbling: a background process that automatically reports what you watch on your media center. By connecting Moviebase to the same Trakt account, every scrobble flows into your Moviebase history, statistics, and episode progress — without you lifting a finger.

The flow works like this: You watch on Plex or Kodi, the Trakt scrobbler detects it and logs it to your Trakt account, and Moviebase syncs from Trakt to show it in your history and statistics.

1Set Up Your Trakt.tv Account

If you do not already have a Trakt account:

  1. Go to trakt.tv and create a free account
  2. Complete your profile setup
  3. Note your username — you will need it when connecting apps

If you already use Trakt with Moviebase, skip to Step 2. You will use the same account.

Use the same Trakt account for both your media center and Moviebase. Using separate accounts means your data will not sync.

2Install the Trakt Scrobbler

For Plex Users

There are two popular options for Plex-to-Trakt scrobbling:

PlexTraktSync (Recommended)

  1. Install PlexTraktSync — a free, open-source Python tool
  2. Run the setup and authorize both your Plex and Trakt accounts
  3. It syncs your Plex watch history to Trakt and can run on a schedule

Plex Trakt Scrobbler

  1. Install the Plex Trakt Scrobbler plugin
  2. Authorize it with your Trakt account
  3. It automatically scrobbles in real-time as you watch

For Kodi Users

  1. Open Kodi and go to Add-ons and then Install from repository
  2. Navigate to Services and find Trakt
  3. Install the Trakt add-on
  4. Open the add-on settings and authorize it with your Trakt account
  5. Kodi will now scrobble every movie and episode you watch

For Other Media Centers

Trakt supports scrobbling from Emby, Jellyfin, Infuse, and other media servers. Visit trakt.tv/apps for the full list of compatible apps and plugins.

3Connect Moviebase to Trakt

If Moviebase is not already connected to your Trakt account:

  1. Open Moviebase on your Android device
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Tap Trakt.tv and authorize the connection using the same account you used in Step 2
  4. Enable sync for watch history, ratings, watchlist, and collections
  5. Run the initial sync

If you already have Moviebase connected to Trakt, you are done. Scrobbled data from your media center will appear in Moviebase automatically on the next sync.

4Verify the Full Chain Works

Test the complete flow:

  1. Play a movie or TV episode on your Plex or Kodi setup
  2. After it finishes (or after a few minutes of playback), check your Trakt profile at trakt.tv to confirm the scrobble appeared
  3. Open Moviebase and sync — the same title should now appear in your Moviebase watch history
  4. Check your statistics to see the watch counted in your totals

If the scrobble does not appear in Trakt:

  • Verify the scrobbler plugin is running and authorized
  • Check that you are signed into the correct Trakt account
  • Some scrobblers require a minimum watch percentage (usually 80 percent) before they report

If the scrobble appears in Trakt but not Moviebase:

  • Open Moviebase settings and run a manual sync
  • Verify both services are connected to the same Trakt account

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this work with a free Trakt account? Yes. Scrobbling from Plex and Kodi via third-party plugins works with a free Trakt account. Trakt's paid VIP tier is only needed for automatic scrobbling from streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus.

Will old Plex or Kodi watch history sync? PlexTraktSync can backfill your existing Plex history to Trakt. The Kodi add-on only scrobbles new watches. Either way, once the data is in Trakt, Moviebase picks it up.

Can I scrobble from multiple devices? Yes. You can have Trakt scrobblers on your Plex server, Kodi box, and any other supported device. All scrobbles go to the same Trakt account and appear in Moviebase.
