Ghostbusters Movies in Order: Main Story and the 2016 Reboot
Watch Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II, Afterlife and Frozen Empire for the main story. The 2016 film is a separate reboot, not a missing sequel.

Where should you start?
Begin with the 1984 original, then Ghostbusters II. Afterlife and Frozen Empire return to that continuity with a later generation. The 2016 film is a separate reboot, so it should be treated as another interpretation rather than a missing chapter between the older and newer stories.
The four-film main story in order
- Ghostbusters (1984)
- Ghostbusters II (1989)
- Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
- Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Release order is also the practical story order for this continuity. The four cards deliberately follow the original team's world and its later continuation. They do not claim to include every theatrical Ghostbusters film: the 2016 reboot is a separate fifth feature outside this selection.
Where does the 2016 Ghostbusters fit?
Ghostbusters (2016), also marketed as Answer the Call, introduces another team in its own version of the setting. Watch it independently if you want a different comic ensemble. It is not required before Afterlife, and its position between 1989 and 2021 in a release calendar does not make it part of their story.
If your aim is to see all five theatrical features by release year, watch the original and Ghostbusters II, then the 2016 reboot, then Afterlife and Frozen Empire. Keep the continuity change in mind rather than looking for a bridge from the reboot into Afterlife.
Do you need the older films before Afterlife?
Afterlife introduces a younger generation, so its immediate adventure can be an entry point. However, the meaning of its discoveries and family connections depends on the earlier world. Our recommendation is to see the 1984 film first, then use the full four-film route if you enjoy it.
For a shorter plan, the original followed by Afterlife provides an introduction to that connection, but it leaves out the second film. Treat that as a selective route, not a complete summary of the franchise. Frozen Empire follows Afterlife's team and works better once you know them.
Are the animated series required?
No. This guide follows the live-action features. You do not need to complete The Real Ghostbusters or other animated spin-offs to follow the four films above. Explore those separately if the characters and ghost-catching premise are what you want more of.
Our take on the collection
Moviebase editorial
The original balances workplace comedy with supernatural effects; the newer continuation places more emphasis on family history and returning symbols. Which approach works best depends on whether you prefer the ensemble’s banter or the broader mythology. Some frightening imagery may surprise younger viewers.
Planning your watchlist
The core grid follows the original continuity. Animated series and the reboot can be explored afterward without changing the order of that main feature-film story.
Try two evenings for the original pair and two more for Afterlife and Frozen Empire. That preserves the generational shift without asking you to watch everything in one sitting. Use the runtime figures on the cards to allow for breaks; the total covers the four-film selection, excluding the reboot and television episodes.
For a family movie night, check each film's local age classification and content notes. Comedy does not remove the frightening images, and the newer films do not all have the same balance of jokes and supernatural peril. Our movies to watch with parents offers other directions for a shared viewing night.
