Where should you start?
Watch The Hangover first. It introduces the friends and the missing-night mystery that gives the original its shape. If you want the whole trilogy, continue with Part II and Part III in release order.
The Hangover trilogy in order
There is no prequel or alternate movie chronology to sort out. The relationships and consequences accumulate across the three films, even when the structure changes.
Does Part III use the same setup?
Do not expect the third film simply to repeat the original’s search through a forgotten night. It changes the structure and leans more on the group’s existing relationships and the trouble attached to them. Watching it first would give you returning characters without much of the context behind their behavior.
Part II is the more useful follow-up if what you want is another version of the first film’s escalating-disaster pattern. Whether that repetition feels comfortable or disappointing depends on how much of the original’s appeal came from surprise.
Can you watch only the first film?
Yes. The original is a sensible one-night choice and does not require two sequels to make the experience worthwhile. Start there before deciding whether you want a trilogy marathon.
Avoid detailed plot summaries beforehand. The pleasure comes partly from reconstructing what happened alongside the characters; knowing the chain of discoveries removes some of the reason to keep watching.

The comedy is built around embarrassment, escalation and the gap between what the characters think happened and what they discover. That makes the original easier to recommend as a starting experiment than the whole trilogy as an automatic commitment.
The films are deliberately crude. Some jokes and depictions can feel dated or alienating, and familiarity with the cast does not make the tone suitable for every group. Choose this for friends who already enjoy uncomfortable adult comedy, rather than as an all-purpose celebration-night pick.
Planning your watchlist
Try one film per evening, or begin with the original and decide together whether to continue. A trilogy sitting lasts roughly five hours using the listed runtimes, before breaks; fatigue can make a repeated comic rhythm less effective.
