Marvel Movies to Watch in Order: Nine Selected Highlights

A highlights list, not the full MCU

The nine films above are selected highlights in release order. They are not a complete Marvel Cinematic Universe checklist, and watching only these entries leaves gaps in character introductions and ongoing stories.

Use this list to choose an area of the MCU to explore. For a complete first watch, build a separate release-order list that includes the intervening films; do not mistake a short recommendation list for every required chapter.

Start with a character or team

Iron Man introduces Tony Stark and provides a clear starting point. Guardians of the Galaxy introduces a different team with its own tone. Black Panther focuses on Wakanda, though its central character has appeared earlier in the MCU.

The Avengers films are ensemble payoffs rather than self-contained introductions. The Winter Soldier and Thor: Ragnarok also build on established characters; they are recommendations for those parts of the story, not substitutes for their earlier films.

Give crossover films their context

Watch Infinity War before Endgame. They form a connected pair, but many of their relationships and emotional moments depend on films outside this selection. Spider-Man: No Way Home likewise builds on earlier Spider-Man stories and works best after the preceding MCU Spider-Man films.

For a movie night, choose one film or a clearly connected pair rather than jumping between crossover finales because they have high audience ratings.

What works well: a range of science-fiction adventure, espionage, fantasy and ensemble action. It offers several directions for a more focused watchlist.

What may not suit you: the shared-universe model asks for more background viewing than a standalone film. Our selection favors distinctive tone and memorable character work; it does not claim that omitted entries are irrelevant.
